Gendarmería de Chile es un Servicio Público dependiente del Ministerio de Justicia, que tiene por finalidad atender, vigilar y contribuir a la reinserción social de las personas que por resolución de autoridades competentes, fueren detenidas o privadas de libertad y cumplir las demás funciones que le señala la ley (Art. 1° del Decreto Ley N° 2.859, Fija Ley Orgánica de Gendarmería de Chile).
